What Sir Edmund Hillary Did After Climbing Mt. Everest Will Inspire You
On May 29, 1953 Sir Edmund Hillary did what no man had done before — He climbed to the top of Mt. Everest.
He would later write about his experience,
“I continued hacking steps along the ridge and then up a few more to the right and to my great delight I realized we were on top of Mount Everest and that the whole world spread out below us.”
It is interesting to note how Hillary handled his instant fame (shortly after, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II) with great modesty. The New York Times painted him as someone with “tigerish confidence on a mountain, but little taste for formal social doings.”
Here was the first man to have conquered the highest mountain in the world and yet, he continued to list his occupation as “beekeeper.”
What you may not know is that Sir Edmund cared so deeply about the Napalese people that in the years following his climb he founded the Himalayan Trust and worked to build clinics, schools and hospitals surrounding the mountain.
While the footsteps he left atop Everest quickly disappeared, his efforts to heal the world below will never melt away.
And, so it is with the “mountain of success” that you climb daily. Reaching the top can oft inspire you to leave more than footprints behind.
